Leadership: At What Cost?

By Adam R Glendye

I read a quote by Henry David Thoreau that says \”The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.\” This quote is a wonderful assessment tool for leaders and business owners. As leaders we are consistently working to better ourselves, our companies, and our families. As we develop ourselves the natural tendency is to think that our companies, our health, and our families will benefit. Are you guilty of thinking that working harder will get you more results?

\"\"

To be honest, I have said \”no one will work harder than me\” at least a few times this week and as a person who works in clinical psychology, I have to be cautious about what I mean by that phrase. This is where H.D. Thoreau\’s quote comes in. What if our \”hard\” is defined by an exchange of our life-giving energy. If we channel this energy from a healthy and positive place, this price can be fulfilling and meaningful; however, if this energy is anxiety, stress, or anger this \”life exchange\” can be debilitating.

We need to be careful and cognizant of how we \”price\” our leadership. We need to make sure that our leadership gives life and positive energy. This positive energy can fuel innovation for your company. It can generate healthy adjustments to your physical and emotional health. This positive energy can create healthy relationships with your spouse and your children.

So, how will you price your leadership?
