Narratives and How They Affect Us

Others’ Narratives: How They Shape Our Identity

As human beings, we are storytellers by nature. Our pursuits are a story, narratives and how they affect us, shaped together by experiences, perceptions, and interpretations. But what happens when our pursuits are influenced by the narratives of others? How does their storytelling impact the tale we tell ourselves about who we are?

Development of Narratives from Childhood

From the moment we are born, we are surrounded by a chorus of voices shaping our understanding of the world and ourselves. Our parents, teachers, friends, and even strangers all contribute to the narrative of our identity. They label us, praise us, criticize us, and mold our perceptions of ourselves in ways both subtle and profound.

Consider a child who is repeatedly told they are “shy” or “quiet” by well-meaning adults. Over time, these labels become ingrained in their self-concept, shaping how they interact with others and perceive their own abilities. Similarly, a teenager labeled as “troublemaker” may begin to internalize this identity, living up (or down) to the expectations others have set for them.

Labels and Stories

But it’s not just the explicit labels that influence us. The stories others tell about us—their interpretations of our actions, their perceptions of our strengths and weaknesses—also play a significant role in shaping our sense of self. A friend who consistently describes us as “brave” or “kind” can bolster our confidence and reinforce positive aspects of our identity. Conversely, a critical boss or partner may undermine our self-esteem, planting seeds of doubt and insecurity.

What’s particularly insidious about these external narratives is that we often internalize them without question. We accept the labels others assign us, incorporating them into our own self-concept without considering their validity or the agenda behind them. In doing so, we relinquish control over our own story, allowing others to define who we are.

Because this phenomenon is perhaps most evident in the age of social media, where our lives are increasingly curated and presented for public consumption. The comments, likes, and shares we receive on our posts can feel like validation or rejection of our identity, shaping how we perceive ourselves and our worth. We may find ourselves chasing the approval of strangers, seeking external validation to fill the void left by our own uncertain sense of self.

Reclaim Your Narrative

So how do we reclaim ownership of our narrative in a world where external voices clamor for our attention? It begins with awareness—recognizing the power that others’ narratives hold over us and questioning their influence on our identity. We must become discerning storytellers, critically evaluating the stories we tell ourselves and the stories others tell about us.

This process of self-reflection and introspection is not easy. It requires courage to challenge the narratives that have become ingrained in our psyche, to question the validity of the labels we’ve accepted without question. But in doing so, we reclaim agency over our own story, freeing ourselves from the constraints imposed by others’ perceptions.

Power of Your Voice

It also requires surrounding ourselves with voices that empower rather than diminish us. Seek out friends, mentors, and allies who see your potential and encourage you to grow into the fullest expression of yourself. Surround yourself with those who challenge you to rewrite your story, to embrace new roles and identities that align with your truest self.

Ultimately, the narrative we tell ourselves about who we are is a reflection of the stories we choose to believe. By taking ownership of our own story and resisting the urge to passively accept the labels others assign us, we empower ourselves to craft a narrative that is authentic, empowering, and uniquely our own.
