Lazy Genius: Coping Stress Before It Begins

The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi, introduces a framework to help readers become a “Lazy Genius,” which means being a genius about the things that matter and, lazy about the things that don’t. Instead of striving for perfection, her approach focuses on embracing progress, letting go of unnecessary pressure, and creating systems that serve the individual’s unique life. All the things that can be amplified around the Holiday season. The decision fatigue is real, and at The Pursuit Counseling we want to help you decrease your stress and anxiety by helping you to identify your values and live, a meaningful life- even during the holidays.

“Reclaim Your Peace by Honoring Your Values: Coping with Holiday Stress Before It Begins”

The book offers practical tips, strategies, and real-life examples to help people simplify decision-making and make life easier without feeling overwhelmed. And of course the Holidays are a time when we can feel the most overwhelmed and pressured around decision making due to cultural, familial, personal, and societal expectations. So let’’ take a look at the principles and how they might provide a framework for you through the holiday season.

The Lazy Genius Principles:

  1. Decide Once – Make a single decision for recurring situations to eliminate the need for constant choices (e.g., always having pizza on Fridays).
  2. Start Small – Avoid getting overwhelmed by beginning with one small step instead of trying to overhaul everything at once.
  3. Ask the Magic Question – Ask yourself, “What can I do now to make life easier later?” This helps you focus on actions that will save time and energy.
  4. Live in the Season – Recognize that life has seasons, and not everything can happen at the same time. Embrace the current season you are in, rather than trying to do it all.
  5. Build the Right Routines – Create routines that are realistic for your lifestyle and help alleviate stress rather than adding more pressure.
  6. Set House Rules – Establish simple, guiding rules for your household to reduce friction and decision fatigue, such as no phones at the dinner table.
  7. Put Everything in Its Place – Designate specific spots for your things to make it easy to find them and put them away, reducing clutter and stress.
  8. Let People In – Don’t be afraid to ask for help or accept help from others. Building a community of support can make life easier.
  9. Batch It – Group similar tasks together to save time and streamline your day, such as meal prepping or doing errands in one trip.
  10. Essentialize – Focus on what truly matters to you and let go of everything else. It’s about simplifying your life to align with your priorities.
  11. Go in the Right Order – Do things in the order that makes sense for you, rather than forcing yourself to follow arbitrary steps or sequences.
  12. Schedule Rest – Intentionally plan time to rest and recharge. Without rest, it’s impossible to sustain energy for what matters most.
  13. Be Kind to Yourself – Practice self-compassion, acknowledging that life is messy and imperfect, and that’s okay.

These principles are designed to help people focus their energy and time where it counts, reduce overwhelm, and live with intention while still managing the realities of everyday life.
