What to do when triggered

by Katie Huggins

Navigating triggering seasons can be challenging, but prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining balance and resilience. Amidst the chaos, planning and prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and exercise can help you navigate these times with greater ease and well-being.

1. Establish a consistent sleep schedule. Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. This routine helps regulate your body’s internal clock, promoting better sleep quality and overall well-being. Create a relaxing bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This could include activities like reading, gentle stretching, or practicing mindfulness meditation. Additionally, optimize your sleep environment by keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, free from distractions that may disrupt your rest.

2. Focus on nourishing your body with balanced meals and snacks. During triggering seasons, it’s easy to resort to quick, unhealthy food choices. However, prioritizing nutrition can help support your physical and mental health. Plan your meals ahead of time, incorporating a variety of nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Prepare healthy snacks to have on hand when you’re busy or on-the-go, reducing the temptation to reach for less nutritious options.

3. Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine, even when time is tight. Exercise is a powerful stress reliever and mood booster, making it especially beneficial during triggering seasons. Schedule regular workouts or activities that you enjoy, whether it’s a morning jog, yoga class, or evening bike ride. If time is limited, break up your exercise into shorter sessions throughout the day. Remember that every bit of movement counts, so find opportunities to stay active whenever possible, whether it’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going for a walk during your lunch break.

By planning and prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and exercise, you can better support your well-being during triggering seasons. Remember that self-care is not selfish—it’s necessary for maintaining your health and resilience amidst life’s challenges. By investing in yourself, you’ll be better equipped to navigate difficult times with strength and grace.
