Letting Go: How to Release Emotional Baggage

As the leaves change and the air gets that refreshing chill, fall becomes the perfect time for a little introspection. It’s a season that encourages us to reflect on what we’re carrying—both the good stuff and the weighty baggage that doesn’t serve us anymore. If you’re looking to let go of some emotional pain or past traumas, here are some friendly tips to help you lighten your load.

How to Release Emotional Baggage this Fall

1. Journaling

Let’s start with something simple: journaling. Grab a notebook and let your thoughts flow onto the pages. Remember, journaling is best done from a place of non-judgement, so don’t get too hard on yourself if you “mess up” or can’t seem to communicate exactly what you want. Give yourself permission to express your experience in a way that feels authentic, true, and possibly even messy. It’s all a part of the process!

If you’re feeling a bit of writer’s block, try writing letters to significant people in your life. Possibly those you love, have lost, or even those who have hurt you. The letters are meant for you, there’s no need to plan on sending them. Use them as a tool to better understand where you stand emotionally. This exercise can offer a surprising sense of closure and relief.

Dr Andrew Huberman of the Huberman Lab podcast gives a great writing protocol for mental health.

As a Somatic informed Therapist, I also recommend this writing protocol to help us get out of our thoughts and more into our bodies and inner sensations and emotional patterns.

2. Mindfulness and Meditation

Next up is mindfulness. This is all about being present and noticing your thoughts and emotions. Think of it as a mental detox! You can use deep breathing or guided meditation to help clear your mind. Picture your emotions as leaves gently floating down onto a pond. They create ripples but eventually sink away. This imagery can remind you that while feelings might surface, they don’t have to stick around. We can feel our emotions without becoming them.

3. Get Moving in the Crisp Air

Now, let’s talk about getting active. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a run, or even yoga, being outdoors in that cool fall air can be invigorating. There’s something refreshing about breathing in the crispness of the season that can really help clear your mind. As you move, visualize your emotional baggage dissipating with each step or stretch. It’s empowering to feel the weight lift off your shoulders.

4. Consider Therapy

If you’re struggling to let go, don’t hesitate to seek support. A good therapist can help you navigate the tricky emotions and develop strategies tailored to you. Techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be super helpful for reframing negative thoughts. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is also great for dealing with trauma. Professional support can lead to some serious breakthroughs.

Therapy is not just a place for people who are in desperate need of support (depression, suicidal thoughts, or addiction). Therapy is a pursuit of wanting to be healthier in your personal, professional, and family lives. We can always be better than we currently are.

5. Set Boundaries

Finally, don’t forget the importance of setting boundaries. Sometimes, letting go means recognizing when to distance yourself from people who bring negativity into your life. Learning to say no can be liberating and is essential for your emotional health.
