Embracing Discomfort. Breaking Out of your Comfort Zone
by: Blake Wingo
We all have our happy places. Our nice protective bubble where all the bad things aren’t allowed in. Even the Super Man had the Fortress of Solitude. Even the Man of Steel knew he could not live his life within those walls, however. To fully live life, we have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Easier said than done, right?
First, we need to define what a comfort zone is and why it is important to have them. Picture a cozy bubble, snugly encompassing all that is familiar and predictable. Within this bubble, we feel safe, secure, and in control. It’s where our routines, habits, and familiar surroundings reside. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with seeking comfort, staying confined within its boundaries can hinder our personal and professional growth.
Staying within this bubble is like a body of water without a fresh flow coming into it. The water eventually becomes stagnant and murky. Algae will begin to grow and life dwindles. Similarly, when we remain within our comfort zones for too long, we risk stagnation in our personal and professional lives. Our skills plateau, creativity stagnates, and opportunities for growth pass us by. Breaking out of this comfort zone can be daunting, but this is where personal growth lies, this is where life is. How do we do this, you ask?
Start Small: Begin by challenging yourself with minor discomforts. It could be something as simple as trying a new food or taking a different route to work. Gradually increase the difficulty as you build your tolerance for discomfort.
Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve by stepping out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s improving a skill, expanding your social circle, or pursuing a new hobby, having clear goals will give you a sense of purpose and direction.
Challenge Negative Thoughts: Our minds often conjure up worst-case scenarios when faced with unfamiliar situations. Challenge these negative thoughts by focusing on the potential benefits and growth opportunities instead.
Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection: Understand that growth is a journey, not a destination. Celebrate even the smallest victories along the way, whether it’s mustering the courage to speak up in a meeting or attending a social event solo.
Seek Support: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your efforts to break out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s friends, family, or a therapist, having a support system can make the journey less daunting.
